Introducing Constellations

Art Wants You! Your Voice, Your Stories, Your Unique Perspective.

As a viewer, how does a work of art make you feel? Are you inspired, frustrated, entertained or curious? Do you wonder what the point is? What the work means to other viewers?

As an artist, have you ever considered the story line your work follows in the universe? How does the story change? Morph? Grow over time?

Constellations, the newest project of Point + Line, is a virtual and physical art experience that allows you, encourages you, and enables you to wonder, ask questions, and share your thoughts. We’ve just received a grant to get started!

What, exactly, is Constellations?

Constellations starts by choosing a set of artworks based on their ability to provoke thought. Each of the artworks is shared on the web with viewers across the globe. Viewers (that means you) input their thoughts online, reacting to the artworks as well as to the thoughts of previous viewers, creating online discussions. Our software analyzes these discussions by language structure, sentiment, frequency of terms used, geography, and viewer demographics as available. In turn, this analysis generates visualizations showing the patterns of perceptions each work inspires.

The visualizations will include a map charting ideas by location and a graphic depicting the flow of themes. By showing the individual perceptions as well as the connections between them, the visualizations mirror Constellations.

Thematic Visualization

For the physical Constellations exhibition, each of the artworks will be displayed. The Constellations created by the online discussions will accompany each artwork in place of the traditional artwork label. Instead of only having access to the artist’s name or title of the piece, viewers are given the opportunity to discover the work via other people’s insight. Not only that, but each viewer will also be able to further explore the Constellations and add their own insights via a touch screen device.

Constellations Installation

The artworks and Constellations will also be available to view and interact with online. The Constellations will continue to grow and evolve organically, and in near-real time, as viewers at the physical site and online contribute to the dialogue.

What’s so interesting about that?

This art experience transcends the traditional passive viewing experience by inviting each viewer to step into the roles of storyteller, student, critic or artist. You can respond with a poem, with a narrative, with a question or simply with a statement. The Constellations are a blank slate to share your insights and create a new, unique work of a myriad of interpretations.

We believe everyone not only benefits from art, we believe everyone (and we mean everyone), has a valid opinion about art that should be heard. We also believe that by sharing opinions, viewing art becomes a more dynamic, more powerful and more meaningful experience for all of us.

Sounds great! How do I get involved?

Congratulations on the grant, and on a really intriguing proposition. I'd be very interested in becoming involved in Constellations, to be immersed in a network of creative experiences. The theme Constellation has recently been used by Tate to juxtapose, and visualise connections between works from their collection. I think one of the issues with this was the passivity you mention above - though there were some exciting avenues, as viewers we just followed the paths between works, rather than make our own tracks. This, on the other hand, sounds like a superb opportunity for exploration! When do we get to go, what do I need to do next?
Warm regards, Nigel

I applaud the development of this project. I'm very interested in being a Constellations voice and would like to learn more about details. It is also possible that I can assist in finding a venue to present a Constellations project.
As a producer (aka artist) I'd be interested to learn how you will select work for Constellations projects. Thank you!
